How to Choose the Best Carpet Cleaner and Keep in Tip Top Condition

I choose a particular product for specific reasons. For example, when I shop for computer I look for models with good brand name, reasonable price, and excellent performance to do basic functions (email, listening to songs, and watching occasional videos). The same goes when you choose your carpet deep clean vacuum. You need to have specific set of criteria that you want most. That way, you’ll end up looking for the best product that satisfies you the most!

Regardless of whether this is your first purchase or you’re an experienced user of deep clean vacuums, I’d like to share some tips on how to choose the best carpet cleaner. These tips will be helpful in helping you make a better decision. For other useful tips, check out my Tips for Carpet Deep Clean and Types of Carpet Stains and How to Clean Them.

There is the upright carpet cleaner and the carpet spot cleaner.

  • Upright carpet cleaners are bigger and do large scale cleaning for whole carpets. While pushing these carpet cleaners slowly over the area you want to clean, they will dispense water and cleaning solution from one tank and scrub the area with spinning brushes, then the dirty water will be sucked back into a separate tank. Some carpet cleaners use steam to clean the carpet and these carpet steam cleaners are very effective.
  • Carpet spot cleaners are portable models for cleaning up small spots or spills around your house or on car upholstery. They can be corded or cordless. While cordless or battery operated spot carpet cleaners are convenient, the battery usually does not last long and cannot be used for cleaning a whole carpet.

When choosing a carpet cleaner, remember these:

1. Performance

Your carpet cleaner should have strong suction power and is able to collect much dirt/dust even with a single pass. I’ve had the experience of having to vacuum an area over and over again; I can tell you that it’s a total waste of time! Also, don’t underestimate stick or upright vacuums – the ones I’ve tried (Hoover SteamVac) have good suction!

2. Durability

As a general rule, the machine shouldn’t break down soon after you bought it. Good vacuums can last a few years without needing any sort of replacement. By choosing a highly durable vacuum, you’d save a lot of money from repairs and reduce the hassle of having to take it to the service center.

3. User-friendliness

Some buttons and functions in the vacuum are left untouched even after you’ve been using it for a long while. Truth is, we use the simpler functions most of the time. So, every time I buy a machine, I make sure I understand how it works. I’m also not a fan of manual-reading so if I can understand it without going through the manual, it is good enough for me! I don’t need an ultra sophisticated machine that I can’t operate.

4. Lightweight

Speaking of weight, I’m glad that manufacturers these days came up with lighter designs. Most of the carpet cleaner designs available today are just perfect for petite moms (like me!). All of the vacuums recommended in my blog are suitable for use around the house and they are light enough to move around without need to break a sweat. 5. Price

Last but not least, it’s important to choose a vacuum with reasonable price. Reasonable can be subjective so in my terms, I’d usually spend about $100-$200 for a vacuum. If it costs less, I give myself a pat on the back for grabbing a superb deal. If I had to buy a carpet cleaner that costs more than $200, I’d make sure I have really good reasons and that it works really well.

4 Ways to Keep Your Vacuum Cleaner in Tip Top Condition

I’d like to share a secret with you- do you know that you save A LOT of money if you can just extend the use of say, half of your household appliances? Repairs and replacements need money. I’ve used up quite a lot of money just to fix my microwave oven, shower heater, cooking stove, television (and the list goes on…). Same goes for my vacuum cleaners. It was not until sometime later that I learned from a friend how to keep them in tip top condition, with some simple and easy-to-do steps. I’ll share those steps with you right here.

Here are the steps to maintain your vacuum cleaner:

(1) Take Time to Clean Debris and Dirt off the Roller Brush

I like to pay attention to the roller brush because if it’s filled with dirt, my vacuum cannot work well. The roller brush takes debris and dirt off the floor/carpet. It’s quite easy to clean actually. Usually, I’d use a sharp scissor to take out clumps of hair or dirt. After that I use a damp sponge to clean the brush. Voila! It’s as good as new again.

(2) Replace Vacuum Cleaner Bags Every 2 Months

I make it a point to change my cleaner bags every 2 months once (depending on your usage, you can change it every month). Cleaner bags hold dust and debris. When I replace the bags, I sometimes add baking soda or powder beans into the bag. It helps prevent foul odor plus I get a whiff of sweet aroma whenever I vacuum!

(3) Dust the Inside of Your Vacuum

Yes, not only your floor needs dusting, the inside of your vacuum must be kept clean because that’s where all the debris and allergen from your house is trapped in. You can also use a wet cloth to wipe the inside of the vacuum.

(4) Replace Belts and Filter Every 6 Months

I’ve had a bad experience with clogged filter on my vacuum. You see, my second son suffers from asthma and he’s allergic to dust. There was once he suddenly felt difficulty in breathing even though I had cleaned the house thoroughly. Then, I realized I had problem with my vacuum cleaner filter because I forgot to change it for many months. What a lesson! Clogged filter makes it hard to trap allergens. Now, I always make it a point to change my filter every 6 months. To remember, I mark it down on the date I visit the dentist. And that’s about every 6 months.

There are some signs if your vacuum needs professional fixing. Look out for these signs:

a) Burning electrical smell

b) Poor cleaning even though all the other parts are in good working condition (bag, belt, and roller brush)

c) Machine making more noise than it usually does

d) Difficult to push machine when you vacuum
